Discover Sacramento Airport: Gateway to Exciting Adventures

Sacramento Airport: Essential Guide for Travelers

Sacramento airport navigation has gotten complicated with all the terminal updates and airline changes flying around. As someone who has flown out of SMF more times than I can count, I learned everything there is to know about making this airport work for you. Today, I am sharing it all with you.

History and Background

Sacramento International opened in 1967 as Sacramento Metropolitan Airport. The original terminal had just five gates. I have seen photos from those early days, and it is almost unrecognizable compared to today. The airport serves Northern California and even parts of Nevada, making it a regional hub that punches above its weight.

Terminals and Facilities

There are two terminals, and knowing which one you need saves real headaches. Terminal A handles American and Delta. Terminal B is where you find Southwest, Alaska, and several other carriers. Probably should have led with this, honestly: check your terminal before you leave home.

  • Free Wi-Fi throughout both terminals (actually works, unlike some airports I have been through)
  • Luggage carts near baggage claim and parking areas
  • Restaurants and coffee shops with decent variety

Terminal A has the more traditional feel. Terminal B went modern with its architectural style and some genuinely impressive art installations. I am apparently one of those people who notices airport design, and Terminal B works for me while generic terminals never do. The LEED Silver certification reflects real commitment to sustainability. That is what makes Terminal B endearing to frequent flyers.

Transportation and Parking

  • Hourly Parking: Perfect for quick pickups and drop-offs
  • Daily Parking: Works if you are leaving your car for a few days
  • Economy Parking: The smart choice for longer trips, with shuttle service

The shuttle buses between economy lots and terminals run regularly enough that you will not stand around forever. Yolobus connects to downtown Sacramento for public transit. Uber and Lyft are available. Rental car agencies have their own dedicated shuttle.

Security and Check-in

Standard TSA procedures apply. I aim for two hours before domestic flights, three for international. TSA PreCheck lanes exist for those who have enrolled. Keep your ID and boarding pass ready – sounds obvious, but I have watched people fumble through bags while the line backs up.

Airlines and Destinations

SMF connects to destinations across the country with some international service:

  • American Airlines: Chicago, Dallas, Phoenix
  • Delta Airlines: Atlanta, Detroit, Salt Lake City
  • Southwest Airlines: Las Vegas, Denver, Los Angeles
  • Alaska Airlines: Seattle, Portland, San Diego

Dining Options

Food choices range from grab-and-go to proper sit-down meals. Check what is available in your terminal before getting through security.
